For this session of the Active Learning CoP, we will have with us Tom Davies, Lecturer of Psychology, at the University of York.
In this session, Tom will share the success he has had in developing and delivering an interactive final year module. He designed the curriculum and VLE to provide active learning where students discuss politics and moral psychology in a supportive, inclusive, yet rigorous atmosphere. This interactive presentation will demonstrate the variety of methods he uses to foster active learning in the classroom including encouraging intellectual humility; scaffolding students oral communication skills; asynchronous activities that help synchronous active learning; pre-planned discussion activities; using Menti for shy/nervous students to contribute to classroom discussions in real time; using Menti to develop dialogue and rapport with students. Participants will have opportunities to discuss their own approaches on designing inclusive and active learning opportunities for their students.

Tom Davies is a social psychologist interested in politics, identity, prejudice, and ideologies. Tom completed his undergraduate and Masters degrees in New Zealand before moving to Scotland to complete his PhD at the University of Edinburgh. He was Associate Lecturer at the Open University before moving to the University of York. He is currently a Lecturer of Psychology with a focus on Teaching and Scholarship, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. |
